Be Smart Buckle Up

Hello people and pups!
Mom came across this campaign on the Bark Magazine website.
They have an entire site dedicated to safe pet travel. I know how much I enjoy going bye bye in the car, and I know most of you love it too.

Unfortunately, some people still drive around with their pets unrestrained. Some in the backs of their trucks even.

Here are some statistics the Bark Buckle up site quotes..

  • Unrestrained pets delay emergency workers' access to human occupants
  • A sixty pound pet becomes a 2700 poung projectile, at just 35 mph
  • Pet travel has increased 300% since 2005
  • Pets escaping post-accident pose many dangers, including catching the loose pet
  • Injured pets may bite first responders and rescue workers
  • Pets may escape through a window or open door and cause a second accident
  • Driver distraction is common when unrestrained pets are rambunctious

I don't know about you, but I don't want to be a projectile!

In addition to an opportunity to take a pledge to secure your precious cargo (that's us), they also offer a free pet safety kit.
The kit comes with a safety sticker for your car, and profile cards to put in the glove box and a bunch of other stuff.
They even take info for an emergency contact for us. Someone who could pick us up if there was ever an accident. For Mom and Dad, that person is different from their emergency contact.
For a few dollars, Mom was able to order cards for all three of us, and an extra sticker for Dad's truck.
It is getting to be vacation season.
I encourage you all to send your humas over to the site to order a kit.
Browse around, there are all kinds of travel tips and info.
There is also a blog post from a pet radio show host who was recently in an accident. Her dogs were in the car, safely restrained, and were unharmed.

Now I have been being buckled in, with plush lambswool lined seats since I was a wee pug. I happily lay back and enjoy the ride. I just like to bark every time the signal light goes on. But I think Brigitte was a free range pug in her former family. She never gives up trying to scratch, claw and plead her way into the drivers seat.

She has to be in the center.
In Dad's truck our bench sits snugly up against the back of the front seats, so Brigitte can just rest her mug on the center console contently.
But in Mom's new car there is a gap, and Brigitte has managed to fit herself right in between on the hump. While she is still connected to the seatbelt by her strap, Mom thinks there is a better solution. Any of you multiple dog homes have any suggestions?

  1. I sure would like an answer to that question! My two are MONSTERS in the car. We currently use their regular harnesses, and we attach them to the car seatbelts using caribiner clips. Natty never fails to get herself all twisted up in the seatbelt, and they both just whine whine WHINE the entire time, wanting to be up front. I'd love to try something else, but don't want to spend a whole lot of money on those pet car seats when I have a feeling they won't work much better...I have visions of them climbing out of the seat and dangling there, while I try to simultaneously right them AND avoid an accident. *Sigh. What's a pug mom to do?

Oh what a good Postie!! We are put in Pugmobile with a Harneess and a thing that attaches to the seatbelt, but sometimes even with all of that Stripper Dulce appears and get out of her harness, Licky tries to get out of it but her inner stripper does not work, We are afraid with the car seat they will get out of car window, but still will go take a look thank again

  7. We have a car seat that two of us can fit in, plus the kind of strap that goes into the seat belt clippie thingie. When we travel and mom rents a car, we sit in the back seat hooked to the seat belt. When it's a trip around town, Tallulah and Petunia take turns riding in the itty bitty back seat of the truck also hooked to the seat belt. If Isabelle goes with us, she sits in the car seat by herself.

This is the kind that we use that clips right into the seat belt. It works great for us because we have some slack to sit up and lie down but it doesn't let us get tangled in the seat belt.

  8. You are so wise, Wilma. I'm going to show this to Momma because she says I need restraining. I'm not sure what that means but I don't like riding in the car. It makes me nervous and I get all crazy. Momma says if I can't calm down then I will have to stay home while her and Daddy go on fun road trips. How unfair!

  9. Hi Wilma,

We don't want any puggies being projectiles. When ever I go in the car, I ride in my Sherpa carrier that Mom buckles up with the seat belt. I know first hand this works. A couple of years ago, on the way home from the vet, we were rear ended. I was safe & sound in my buckled up carrier.

    Thanks for the great post!

    Hugs,
    Suki

  12. What a good idea for a post in your blog. Hu-mom used to work in the insurance industry as a claims adjuster for car accidents with injuries. She handled some claims that also had pets involved, so she knew about restraining pets, too! Since we were pups on our 1st ride home, we have always been secured in our car seats. Before Mack came to live with us, he lived with our human brother and we gave Mack a car seat as a gift. We each have our own. We use the Snoozer Dog Seats. Check them out at http://www.snoozerpetproducts.com/. As soon as I get clipped in, I sleep. Mack likes to stay awake and bark at doggies going by.

Thanks for bringing this important issue to everyone's attention!

We're heading over to check out the pet safety kit.

    Drools and licks,
    Minnie and Mack

  13. Oh thanks so much for the website info! Mom is going there right away. I am almost always in my crate in the back of Mom's Jeep. Except one day I had to ride in the front on the way back from the vet because it was 150 degrees outside. And Mom wished that she had something to restrain me with. So thanks!

    Later!
    Vito
